The third solo Wolverine movie – and possibly Hugh Jackman’s last turn as the adamantium-laced mutant – has arrived. Logan marks Jackman’s 10th appearance as fan-favorite Wolverine, including uncredited cameos and his “magazine” cameo in 2016’s Deadpool. That’s a streak unheard of in superhero movie history. To celebrate this, let’s take a look at 10 of Wolverine’s best moments in the X-Men movie universe that started way back in 2000 – including one in Logan. Spoilers ahead, obviously.
10. Wolverine’s claws debut – X-Men
Wolverine was introduced early on in X-Men, fighting in a cage for money. His adamantium claws would debut shortly after in a bar fight. We didn’t just see his claws pop out in a split-second – director Bryan Singer gave as an up-close look while one of his claws was coming out of his hand.
9. “Go fuck yourself” – X-Men: First Class
Ignoring “that” cameo in Deadpool, Wolverine’s uncredited appearance in First Class was the briefest. It only lasted for, what, less than 30 seconds? But it gave birth to possibly his greatest quote ever in the X-Men movies, at the expense of Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr. Wolverine dropped the “Go fuck yourself” comment before the two could even say their agenda.
8. Wolverine kills Jean Grey – X-Men: The Last Stand
Wolverine had to kill the woman he loves, crying while he did so. Need we say more? Okay. The emotional scene in The Last Stand was also one of the very rare times, if not the only time, that audiences were able to see the adamantium inside Wolverine’s body, courtesy of Jean Grey’s destructive powers.
7. Wolverine survives a nuclear blast – The Wolverine
We’ve seen Wolverine recover from ghastly injuries. But his recovery from a freaking nuclear blast in The Wolverine in just a matter of seconds was the most amazing display of his regenerative abilities.
6. Wolverine vs. Striker’s team – X2: X-Men United
Wolverine’s rampage at the X-Mansion in X2 was the first time we saw him, well, go on a rampage. William Striker’s assault team were all rendered useless, unable to stop the “animal.” The sequence is also best remembered for Wolverine’s quote, “You picked the wrong house, bub.”
5. Waking up in the ‘70s – X-Men: Days of Future Past
The entire sequence with the mob gangsters was one of the funniest in the entire movie, especially Wolverine’s reaction upon seeing that he still has his bone claws.
4. Weapon X – X-Men: Apocalypse
Okay, Wolverine’s appearance in Apocalypse was just a glorified cameo. But it was the first time that we saw him in his full Weapon X gear, which was basically ripped from comic book pages.
3. The opening sequence – X-Men Origins: Wolverine
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is widely considered as the worst X-Men movie ever. Which makes it even more annoying that it owns arguably the best opening sequence. The opening sequence was a montage of Wolverine and his half-brother, Sabretooth, taking part in four different wars – American Civil War, World War I, World War II, and Vietnam War.
2. Wolverine vs. Lady Deathstrike – X2: X-Men United
Wolverine has been through a number of one-on-one fights throughout the X-Men movie universe. But none as brutal as his fight with Lady Deathstrike in X2. Both have the same powers and enhancements, so it was an even match. The fight was gruesome, especially the part where Lady Deathstrike rapidly, uh, karate-chopped Wolverine’s back using her adamantium nails.
1. One last blood-fest – Logan
With his regenerative abilities getting a temporary boost, Wolverine gives us one last look at his unparalleled ferocity toward the end of Logan. The sequence arguably isn’t better than Wolverine’s other rampages. But the emotional cloud hanging over the entire sequence sets it apart, especially once you see what happens afterward.
There you have it. 10 of the best Wolverine moments in the X-Men movie universe to commemorate Hugh Jackman’s 10th appearance as Logan/Wolverine. Logan is now playing in theaters, with critics saying it’s the best X-Men movie yet.
